Yin to Make the Heart Sing - 7 Reasons to Give Yin a Try
Yin to make the heart sing! ❤️
7 Benefits of Yin Yoga - It's one to try people 🙌🏼
I was really grateful to cover a Yin Yoga class last week. It's been a while and it felt like coming home.
I discovered Yin when I was pregnant with my son. I was booked on a three week intensive Ashtanga teacher training in Spain , but when I discovered I was pregnant they said it would be too intense to do whilst pregnant. So I started looking for an alternative course that was slower paced, and low and behold there was a course starting the following weekend in Yin with Sarah Lo.
So what actually is Yin Yoga?
Yin yoga is a super slow-paced style of yoga that focuses on holding poses for longer durations usually ranging from 3 to 5 minutes or even longer. While traditional yoga practices emphasise muscular strength and flexibility Yin yoga targets the deeper connective tissues such as ligaments tendons and fascia. So you're going in deep with this one, for the body mind and soul.
How often in life are we rushing around at a million miles an hour? Well Yin is a perfect way to ease down those gears into stillness and stay there for a while. For some this can be a much bigger challenge than a more active class, you have that time to just be, no running away, facing whatever comes up.
It's certainly a class to try at least once in your lifetime, and here are a few benefits of incorporating a bit of yin in your life.b
7 Benefits of Yin Yoga
1. Increased flexibility: Yin yoga poses are designed to gently stretch and stimulate the connective tissues leading to increased flexibility over time.
2. Stress reduction: Yin yoga incorporates mindfulness plus deep breathing techniques which can help promote relaxation and reduce stress and anxiety. Lowering the heart rate and allowing you to let go that little bit more.
3. Improved joint mobility: The long-held poses in Yin can help improve the range of motion in the joints and enhance joint mobility. Slow and steady allowing that space to unravel into a pose.
4. Enhanced circulation: Yin yoga poses stimulate blood flow to the various parts of the body contributing to better circulation and oxygenation of tissues.
5. Balancing energy flow: According to the principles of Yin yoga each pose targets specific meridians (energy channels) in the body helping to balance the flow of chi, prana, life force energy (whatever you want to call it) and promote overall well-being.
6. Mental clarity and focus: Release and relax, we're all too often in our heads, Yin can support an easing into a calm and meditative state helping to improve mental clarity focus and mindfulness.
7. Relaxation and better sleep: The combination of gentle stretching deep breathing and relaxation in Yin yoga can contribute to improved sleep quality and relaxation.
If you're in Newcastle there's a gorgeous class on a Wednesday 7pm at Shanti Bee
It's important to note that while Yin yoga has many potential benefits it may not be suitable for everyone. As with any exercise or wellness practice it's advisable to consult with a qualified instructor or healthcare professional before starting a new routine especially if you have any pre-existing medical conditions or injuries.
